Almost one year on and 3 date changes later, I made it to Adelaide.
No planning for this trip. Not my usual maps plotting and spreadsheet of places to see. Having moved dates twice, I did not want to raise my hope.
Adelaide aka the city of churches has a long list of you guess right, churches and heritage buildings. I was keen to check them out.
I arrived on market night at Adelaide Central market. Not planned but how convenient! Food and sketch opportunities, what a great way to start my trip.
Adelaide (established in 1836) is the only planned capital city that was not settled by the convicts. And the smug locals make sure you know about it.
They are a proud bunch of people and rightly so. Their city heritage is well preserved and looked after. I am most impressed with the clean streets. Hey when you sit and sketch for hours on the curbsides, these clean streets are very pleasant, inviting almost!
Many heritage buildings are within easy walk around the CBD. I walked and sketched all day long. Friendly locals often stop to chat. Fiona and I even had a go at the electric scooters. Huge fun zooming around after a long day.
I had a great afternoon with the local chapter of Urban Sketchers. With USK, making friends is easier than ABC. Anita, the lady boss
made me feel so welcome.
Adelaide also nicknamed 20 mins city. Many interesting places are within the 20 mins radius. How considerate eh?
Next day, Lesley, Richard and I explore Port Adelaide. I lost count of the numbers of heritage buildings so much character so little time to capture them. This sure is to-come-back list! True sketcher as we are, we hit the art store and come home happy loaded with art gears!
Autumns colours were on show at Hahndorf. I was speechless. We made a pilgrimage visit to The Cedar. The sstudio, home & grounds of famous landscape painter Hans Heysen and Nora Heysen. Barbara, our friendly guide showed us around the house and telling us many interesting stories. I did not want to leave..
We found Borsa Cucina Pasta by chance, the pasta was to die for. I was determine to sketch the working chefs.. So when opportunity calls for a catch up with Barbara and hubby Kevin, Borsa was the perfect choice. I got there earlier, not only I get to sketch the chaps at work, I got rewarded with a huge glass of red! My to-come-back list is growing.
Elizabeth, old mate from school caught up too. She's so sweet and polite putting up with me sketching too.
I also had a little disaster turned happy accident. First time ever, I lost my sketchbook. I ran like a headless chook around the Adelaide Botanic Garden with tears threatening to spill . It was dreadful.
Then I got a call from a lady from National Wine Centre. Deb's kind friend has picked it up and was in a hurry so left it with Deb. Deb was a bit shock when I turned up in my tear-streaked yet happy face. I am so glad I had my contact details on sketchbook. So fellows out there, very important lesson, please do write down contact details on sketchbooks. A MUST!
Adelaide does not disappoint, in fact I keep falling in love with the places, food and people.
I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday in Adelaide. So much fun.
I will be back, Adelaide!
